SC college students ready 62,000 meals for Africa

GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) — Limestone College freshmen are sending 62,000 meals to the Horn of Africa after student volunteers assembled food packages for the hungry.

Limestone Chaplain the Rev. Ron Singleton told the Herald-Journal of Spartanburg (http://bit.ly/rpzTOk ) the Gaffney school worked with the organization Stop Hunger Now for Monday’s event.

Singleton says the Charlotte, N.C., office of the aid organization provided packages of fortified rice, soy, vitamins and dried vegetables. The college provided the volunteers.

Stop Hunger Now program manager Brandon Faulkner says most of the food the organization ships to Africa is donated to school food programs and some is sent to crisis aid programs.

Faulkner says the food crisis in Africa is killing 25,000 people daily.
