As Irene path trends east, SC still monitoring

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley continues to closely monitor Hurricane Irene as it spins in the Atlantic.

The projected path of the storm is trending east and only a small part of the state’s northeast coast is now in the area considered a possibility for a landfall this weekend.

Haley’s office says the governor is in touch with emergency officials and will likely provide an update later Wednesday.

There are no coastal evacuations in South Carolina and if they become necessary, would not likely be ordered until Thursday. The governor’s office says visitors on the coast should continue to enjoy their vacations but also monitor developments with Irene.
