East Coast quake shakes SC and historic Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Residents around South Carolina say they felt shaking from the earthquake centered in Virginia but officials are reporting no damage in the state.

Emergency Management Division spokesman Joe Farmer said Tuesday there were no reports of any damage from the Virginia quake by midafternoon.

People in Rock Hill, Columbia and other places in the northern and eastern parts of the state reported shaking.

Charleston businessman Chris Mettler says he was sitting at his desk when he felt movement side to side as if he were having a dizzy spell. He says the shaking lasted several seconds, stopped and started again.

Spokespeople for Duke Energy and Progress said the two companies’ six nuclear power plants in the Carolinas all stayed online.
