Charleston teen convicted of killing 17-year-old

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A 16-year-old Charleston teen has been convicted of killing a 17-year-old in North Charleston last year.

Derell Green faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced on Thursday.

Larry Taron Maybank died after he was shot in the back twice on Feb. 5, 2010.

Testimony indicated the boys had been in an altercation about a month before Maybank was killed.

Prosecutor Bruce DuRant says he’s happy the jury was not swayed by the suspect’s young age. DuRant says Green was old enough at 14 to know better than to shoot someone.

Defense attorney Megan Ehrlich argued there was a lack of physical evidence about the gun and bullets in the case.
