Sweet potatoes handed out at rural SC church
PINOPOLIS, S.C. (AP) — It’s a sweet time for residents in the rural Berkeley County community of Pinopolis as a church has a pile of sweet potatoes free for the taking.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported (http://bit.ly/nq1o04 ) the sweet potatoes were dropped off Tuesday at Wesley United Methodist Church. They were donated by the Society of St. Andrew in Big Island, Va.
The society coordinates volunteers who gather crops left in the fields after harvesting, a process called gleaning. The crops are then distributed in areas with needy residents.
The Rev. Lee Bines says many people in rural Berkeley County have to choose between eating a meal and paying for their medicine.
