Van driver pays fine in SC bicycle rider’s death

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The driver of a van that struck and killed a bicycle rider on a James Island bridge has paid a $113 traffic fine.

An attorney for 44-year-old Gregory Rupley of Charleston says the decision to forfeit bond eliminated the need to report to court Thursday for a hearing on the charge of improper lane usage.

Fifty-four-year-old anesthesiologist Mitchell Hollon was killed July 5 when he was thrown over the wall of the westbound lane to the marsh 40 feet below.

Officials think Rupley drifted into the breakdown lane where Hollon was riding.
