SC program on emotional learning going national

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — An after-school program that started in Charleston 15 years ago to help students develop emotionally is going national after receiving a $1 million donation from a board member.

“Wings” has been helping young people in the Charleston area since 1996. The “Wings” program helps students focus on such things as controlling their tempers, dealing with nerves and taking responsibility for their actions.

About 3,500 students have participated in the program so far.

Officials are considering several cities for expansion including Charlotte, N.C., Atlanta, Baltimore and Jacksonville, Fla. They plan to make a decision by next month.
