Marines have bulldog mascot, but it needs a name
PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — There’s a new bulldog mascot at the Parris Island Marine Corps Training Depot. But the 8-week-old puppy needs a name and the Marines are taking suggestions.
The Beaufort Gazette (http://bit.ly/oU2lwp) reports the new puppy replaces the old mascot, Sgt. Archibald Hummer, who died in his sleep Sept. 7 at the age of 5.
The base commander, Brig. Gen. Lori Reynolds, gets to name the new mascot but the base is seeking suggestions on its Facebook page.
Names that have been suggested include “Dakota,” for recent Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Dakota Meyer and “MoH” for the medal of honor itself.
Another suggestion is “Ira” for Cpl. Ira Hayes, who took part in raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II.
