Canal dispute continues at development on SC coast

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — The two sides in a lawsuit over dredging the canals in Wedgefield Plantation in Georgetown County have agreed the canals belong to the state.

But The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports (http://bit.ly/pMQm8l ) there’s still a dispute over who is responsible for paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for dredging those canals.

Some residents objected when the community homeowners association voted to raise fees by $175 to pay for the dredging. The community has 577 lots but only 81 of them face the canals and residents who don’t live on the canals objected to paying the increased fees.

At issue now is who is responsible for paying back an $800,000 loan the former board took out to pay for the dredging that was completed last year.
