SC Guard unit gets new command sergeant major

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A Charleston-based Army National Guard unit is getting a new command sergeant major.

Tuesday’s ceremony for the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade was a farewell to Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Kirkland and a welcome for incoming Command Sgt. Maj. Leon Gilliam.

The ceremony includes the passing of the brigade’s colors from the outgoing to the incoming commander, symbolizing the shift in responsibility for the unit’s welfare, training and deployment.

A retirement celebration for Kirkland followed the ceremony. Kirkland is completing 27 years of service.
