Humane Society seeks money from Spartanburg County
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — The Humane Society has agreed to continue accepting stray animals from Spartanburg County animal control officers after the county paid about half its past due bill to the organization.
Humane Society President Sandy Christiansen said Tuesday the county sent the organization a check for $56,250. The county’s past due bill is more than $110,000. He says the total balance due is about $200,000.
The organization threatened to stop taking the county’s strays, but agreed to keep accepting animals through Oct. 31 after getting the payment.
Spartanburg County contracts with the Spartanburg Humane Society at an annual fee of $675,000.
Deputy County Administrator Jim Hipp says a committee has been formed so the county and the Humane Society can work together to reach a contractual agreement for the future.
