Free Health Clinic for Seniors
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — We all know times are tough, but the South Carolina Pharmacy Association doesn’t want you to let that get in the way of your health, especially senior citizens. So they’re offering a free health clinic this week. “We realized that there was an opportunity for us to step up and offer a service to the citizens of the Midlands in South Carolina to really show case what pharmacy is about and what pharmacist bring to the table,” says John Pugh, President Elect of the South Carolina Pharmacy Association. John Pugh, President Elect of the South Carolina Pharmacy Association says pharmacists do more than just count pills. “We can help you with drug interactions, finding the right over the counter medication that fits with your symptoms and also what medications you are taking,” says Pugh. This week’s free health clinic will offer blood pressure screenings along with diabetic foot tests which is extremely important. Medical experts say one person dies every 7 seconds from the disease. Here in South Carolina, experts say 3 to 4 people die every day because of the disease. The state as a whole, ranks in the top 10 with the highest percentage of the population with diabetes. But that’s not all that will be offered to seniors, flu shots will also be given. Those will carry a cost, but officials say most insurance companies should cover the cost. Also, if you are on Medicare this event is where you want to be. “This year open enrollment ends on December 7th, rather than through the end of the year, so this is your opportunity to talk with a pharmacist and pick-out the best Part D plan for you,” says Pugh. There are also other added bonuses. “Just leaving knowing what pharmacists can do and solving your drug and medication related problems,” says Pugh. Because here’s what’s really important: “Their health is maintained and they‘ve got flu shots, blood pressure checks and screenings and their overall health,” says Pugh. The free clinic will be held Thursday, October 27, 2011 from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the SC Pharmacy Association’s office at 1350 Browning Road in Columbia. CRANDALL SIMS ABC COLUMBIA NEWS.
