Spurrier Hires Two Assistant Coaches

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has filled out two vacancies on his staff. Spurrier announced Friday that he hired former North Carolina assistant Joe Robinson to be the Gamecocks new special teams coordinator and tight end coach and a former Arkansas assistant Kirk Botkin to be South Carolina’s new linebackers coach. Robinson replaces John Butler, who left the Gamecocks to go to Penn State. Robinson spent a year with the Tar Heels as defensive line coach after leading LSU’s special teams from 2008 to 2010. Botkin comes to the Gamecocks after spending the past two years as a high school coach in Texarkana, Texas. Before that, he was defensive end and special teams coach for two seasons at Arkansas. He replaces Lorenzo Wood, who was promoted to defensive coordinator. Copyright 2012 The Associated Press.
