Gilbert Teen killed while helping remove deer from road

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — The Lexington County Coroner‘s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating an accident that took the life of a 17-year-old William Patrick Corley of Gilbert, SC. Gilbert’s sister describes him as an avid outdoorsman, who loved to hunt. But on the night of February 4 that love for hunting took a terrible turn in tragic irony. According to Coroner Harry O. Harman, Corley parked his vehicle on the side of the roadway on Highway 378 and was assisting an individual who had hit a deer remove the deer from the roadway when he was struck by a 2006 Toyota Camry heading eastbound. Mr. Corley was pronounced at the scene from massive head and body trauma. Sunday, Corley’s friends made a memorial for him at the wreck site. A balloon with the number 18 has also been placed there, Corley would have turned 18 on Sunday. The accident remains under investigation by the Lexington County Coroner‘s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Visitation for William Patrick Corley will be held at the Milton Shealy Funeral Home Tuesday night from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. His funeral will be Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. also at Milton Shealy. The family ask that in lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a donation, do so to the SCDNR “Take One Make One,” program.
