SLED to create ‘Blue Alert’ for fallen officers

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has signed a new law meant to help law enforcement quickly capture suspects accused of killing, seriously injuring or kidnapping an officer.

Haley’s signature Monday created the “Blue Alert Program” within the State Law Enforcement Division.

The law directs SLED to create the guidelines for issuing a blue alert, and to enlist TV and radio broadcasters to help quickly disseminate information on a suspect. Information could also be displayed on electronic traffic signs. Supporters say the program will make it harder for suspects to escape and lead to a quick arrest.

Both the House and Senate passed the bill unanimously.

The Blue Alert could resemble South Carolina’s Amber Alert for missing children.
