Spurrier Talks to Ellington About Returning to Football

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — South Carolina head football coach Steve Spurrier met with Bruce Ellington on Monday on the possibility of Ellington returning to the Gamecock football team. Ellington, who will be a sophomore in football in 2012, announced last week he would focus on just basketball, but recently has had second thoughts. “We’re going to give him three or four more days,” said Spurrier on his radio show Monday night. “I think instead of him saying ‘Hey, I want to play basketball… I want to play football’ let’s really think this thing out thoroughly.” Spurrier added if a new basketball coach is hired in the near future it would be good for Ellington to speak with the new coach about playing the two sports. “Personally I think he can play two sports,” said Spurrier. “I don’t think playing football hurt him in basketball, some people say it did, that’s their opinion.” Ellington is still listed on the 2012 official spring practice roster. He played in all 13 games last season and earned All-SEC honors for being an all-purpose performer. Ellington’s season was highlighted against Clemson when he caught three passes for 71 yards, which included a 49-yard touchdown catch as the Gamecocks defeated the Tigers 34-13. “If he wants to play football we’ll have him back out there maybe next week running some routes,” Spurrier said.
