WOLO, LEXINGTON, S.C. –It’s a global challenge that millions are faced with everyday. Autism is a brain developmental disorder that effects language and social skills. A new study released this week shows startling numbers of more children being diagnosed with the disorder. Vice President of Government affairs for Autism Speaks, Lorrie Unumb says it’s become an epidemic that has increased by 23 percent. Meaning here in South Carolina one in every 90 children are effected, and one in every 55 boys. Unumb says scientists believe the rise in cases could be contributed to more awareness, but admit it could also be a genetic disposition or an environmental trigger. The only problem is, that trigger has yet to be determined. Monday night, millions from New York City, to Brazil and right here across the Midlands…lit blue lights in hopes of increasing awareness and support. As the mother of an 11 year old Autistic son, Unumb says it has changed her world for better and for the worst. Her son, Ryan who is virtually non-verbal often communicates with his family using a tablet with picture/word associations. Unumb says there are so many resources out there that can help children if the disorder is detected early. For more information go to: www.Autismspeaks.org or www.Autismacademyofsc.com
