SC raises $60,000 for Wounded Warrior Project

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina’s football team helped raise about $60,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project, even though the Gamecocks did not wear the specially designed uniforms in its 16-13 loss to Auburn last season.

The jerseys were worn by the Gamecocks in warm-ups, but the team changed into regular uniforms when the Southeastern Conference raised concerns that the numbers were difficult to see.

An on-line auction of the 119 jerseys brought in more than $58,000. The highest bid was for the jersey No. 7, which brought in about $3,500.

There were also 10 footballs autographed by both South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier and Auburn coach Gene Chizik that raised nearly $3,300.

The Wounded Warrior Projects raises awareness and enlists the public’s help for severely injured service men and women among other goals.
