Storms dump large hail, bring strong winds to Midlands

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — A line of powerful storms rolled through the Midlands Sunday afternoon after high instability from moisture in the Carolinas were triggered by the extraordinary heat this afternoon. ABC Columbia viewers e-mailed the station, showing us hail stones as large as two inches over in West Columbia. The storm is causing power outages for more than 12,000 customers throughout the state. The National Weather Service reported another record high for Columbia. The temperature reached 106 degrees at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport, which breaks the record high of 103 set back in 1970.
