Bridge in Beaufort Closed After Crane Accident

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) _ A bridge that connects downtown Beaufort to Lady’s Island has been closed after a crane being carried on a truck hit the structure. Beaufort police said Thursday afternoon they were closing the Richard V. Woods Memorial Bridge as a precaution until Department of Transportation inspectors from Charleston can check for any serious damage. The wreck happened just before 1 p.m. The swing bridge takes U.S. Highway 21 Business over the Intracoastal Waterway. A fixed bridge is located a few miles south.
