Update: Suspect Injured in Five Points Shooting

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — An officer-involved shooting has shaken up the Five Points community. South Carolina Department of Public Safety has had a trooper involved-shooting in Richland County today in which the suspect was injured. Two Highway Patrol troopers were involved but neither was hurt. One eyewitness tells ABC Columbia News that he saw an orange car being chased by a few Highway Patrol officers and heard 14 gunshots during the whole situation. Officials say the incident began today about 8:15 a.m. S/Trooper S.M. Groubert, Troop One/Richland County, stopped a vehicle that passed him travelling at a high rate of speed on I-20 in Richland County. When the trooper approached the vehicle and began talking with the suspect, he observed signs that the suspect appeared to be under the influence. The suspect fled the scene and the trooper began a pursuit. Officials say TFC Jack Tompkins IV, Troop One/Richland County, joined the pursuit at Forest Drive in Richland County. The troopers followed the suspect to the Wells Fargo bank in Five Points. Officials say the suspect exited his vehicle and began firing shots at the troopers in the parking lot. Groubert and Tompkins returned fire, injuring the suspect. Groubert originally joined the Highway Patrol in 2005. Tompkins has been with SCHP since 2010. The State Law Enforcement Division is handling the investigation, and all questions regarding the investigation should be directed to SLED.
