Richland County sheriff looking for volunteers

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott is looking for some volunteers for a program designed to help young people learn from their mistakes.

Lott says he’s looking for people interested in working as volunteer arbitrators. The volunteers would conduct hearings for young people who have some sort of minor brush with the law and hand down appropriate punishments.

The program keeps the young people’s records clean and hopefully keeps them from getting into trouble again. Lott says the program has been around for about four years and has a success rate of over 90 percent.

Training for the program is held in October. More information is available at www.rcsd.net .
