Columbia gives parents time for 1st school day

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The city of Columbia is allowing all employees with children in school two hours off to get their kids into their first day of school.

Mayor Steve Benjamin says it is important for parents to start off a new school year on the right foot.

Benjamin says he is encouraging parents to take time and encourage their children to start their time in school eager to learn.

The mayor says the first day of school is a time of promise and potential and the city wants parents to know they are supported. He says parents have the opportunity to show their children how important education is to their future.
