‘Tanner Way’ Sign to be Unveiled

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Three blocks surrounding the Carolina Stadium in Columbia will have a new name in honor of USC Athleteics Director and two time college world series champion baseball coach Ray Tanner. Council members are expected to read, vote on and accept a resolution that will allow the honorary renaming of the 300, 400 and 500 blocks of Williams Street, between Catawba and Blossom Streets, ‘Tanner Way.’ City officials say they have wanted to do something they felt was important to honor the sports icon. Street topper signs will be attched to the existing signs at those intersections. Tanner is expected to see the sign, for the first time, that will bear his name. After improvements are made to the area including, repaving, installing a new sidewalk and addressing draingage concerns, the official unveiling is scheduled to take place in the fall.
