The Midlands Remembers 9/11
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — First responders’ families convened at the South Carolina Midlands First Responders Monument on Lincoln Street in Columbia to remember the sacrifices of those from different agencies, including: law enforcement, fire, military, and civic organizations coming together for a common cause. Dozens gathered outside the memorial, which includes two historic steel beams from the NYC World Trade Center, for a 40-minute program to commemorate a day that has become a staple in the minds of Americans for the last 11 years. The names of five additional fallen heroes who died in the line of duty in the Midlands since September 11, 2011, were added to the hundreds already displayed. Organizers believe the monument will serve as a source of pride, comfort and healing for those in the Midlands, and whomever else visits the Capitol City, for years to come.
