APNewsBreak: AG wants reporter’s subpoena canceled

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina attorney general is asking a lawyer representing his office to cancel a subpoena issued against a freelance reporter.

A spokesman for Alan Wilson says the attorney general fully supports the shield law, meant to protect reporters from revealing their sources or notes.

An attorney representing Wilson’s office issued the legal document against Sue Summer in August, requiring her to turn over her notes, emails, audio recordings and any other information relating to more than a dozen people involved in an ongoing dispute over soul singer James Brown’s estate.

Summer has been fighting with Wilson’s office over documents she has requested through the Freedom of Information Act. South Carolina’s previous attorney general, Henry McMaster, brokered a deal over the estate that is before the state Supreme Court.
