Okra Strut Finds A New Home

(WOLO) COLUMBIA,S.C, — It’s been going strong for nearly 40 years, and four of them have been without a home property to call their own. Irmo Mayor Pro-Tem, Barry Walker, Sr. says it’s been a struggle to have the event while moving to various locations throughout the town for the past few years. Which means, this year is going to be a more modest event. By August of 2013 all of that will change. Walker says the town has purchased 14 acres of woodlands on Eastview Drive. It’s big enough to host the event each year, and still hold a 500 seat ampi-theatre, walking trails and concert space that will be open to the public year round. While walker admits this year’s event is a smaller footprint then they’d like to have they promise next year is going to be bigger and better than ever. This year’s events kickoff Friday September 28th with a Street Dance beginning at 6pm along Columbia Avenue. Headliners include Rob Crosby and Mustang Sally. Saturday: The Okra Strut Parade will begin at 9am, traveling down St. Andrew’s Road with 5 thousand participants.
