Grant’s Mom: “They were family-like.”

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Tuesday, Freddie Grant, the man accused in the kidnapping of Gabrielle Swainson, pleaded not guilty to an ammunition charge. Moments after the arraignment ABC Columbia spoke with Grant’s mother and brother. “Who wanna be detained, who wants to be in bondage? Nobody wants that,” says Johnny Grant, brother of Freddie Grant. Johnny Grant says his brother isn’t the man some may picture him to be. But, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, he is the man accused of forcefully taking 15 year old Gabrielle Swainson from her Northeast Columbia home more than a month ago. “When I heard the news, you know it was like unbelievable,” says Johnny Grant. We sat down with Gabbiee’s Mom, Elvia Swainson, days after she reported Gabbiee missing. “She needs to be back home safe and sound,” says Elvia Swainson. Johnny Grant says Elvia came to his home with his brother and Gabbiee once to watch a football game. “She stayed downstairs and she was doing homework and something. She didn’t really interact with us. She didn’t have much to say,” says Johnny Grant. Grant’s mother, Lula Jones, says the trio also visited her. “They were very family like, you know,” says Jones. Yet, back in August, police announced Freddie Grant was the main suspeect in Gabbiee’s disappearance after finding ductape with her blood on it in Grant’s Elgin home. They also found ammunition. Grant was then charged with being a felon in possession of ammunition. State prison records show he served time on drug charges back in the 1990’s. Johnny Grant says the recent events have him and his family fearful for his brother. “It’s my brother, I love my brother,” says Johnny Grant. Freddie Grant remains behind bars tonight on the ammunition charge. An October 22nd deadline was given to file any motions in this case. As for the Swainson case, again, he has not yet been charged with kidnapping, but the investigation is ongoing.
