NRC to talk safety assessment of SC nuclear plant

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Federal nuclear regulators are meeting with managers from Westinghouse Electric Co. to talk about safety at the company’s nuclear fuel fabrication plant near Columbia.

Officials from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission are slated to hold a public meeting at the South Carolina State Museum on Tuesday.

The NRC is talking about a two-year review it did of the Westinghouse facility where fuel assemblies for commercial power reactors are made. Officials looked at topics including safety and radiological controls.

Officials say staff determined that Westinghouse conducted its activities safety and securely, protecting public health and the environment.

The NRC says it will continue to monitor a safety operations program that it says needs some improvement.
