Trial about hazing at SC military school continues
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The Kershaw County sheriff will testify later in a federal civil trial about the beating and sexual assault of a Camden Military Academy cadet.
The State newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/13CZM1y) that Sheriff Jim Matthews was supposed to testify Wednesday about a report on a second assault. Defense attorneys said they wanted more time to depose Matthews and two officers.
U.S. District Court Judge Joe Anderson granted the time but says the trial will proceed so other attorneys should handle the depositions.
A cadet’s parents sued the academy after their then 13-year-old son was beaten and raped in 2008 while attending the all-male military academy.
On Tuesday, the academy’s headmaster testified about a beating in 2006.
Reports on both beatings indicated the beatings were related to gang members enrolled as cadets.
