SUMTER, S.C. (WOLO) — Superintendent of the Sumter School District, Randolph D. Bynum, announced his resignation Tuesday. This comes after allegations of school violence, teacher-intimidation tactics and improper testing procedures (a violation of state law) prompted a SLED investigation. Dozens of citizens, residents, staff members and others packed an auditorium Monday night to voice heated concerns about the allegations. According to a statement released Tuesday by the district, Bynum “informed the Board of Trustees that after much prayer, reflection, and counsel with friends, he is requesting that the Board of Trustees release him from the day-to-day responsibilities as district superintendent.” He will remain in that position as the leadership transition process is complete. We are told that should happen on or before August 30, 2013. People we spoke with have mixed views on the Bynum stepping down. A special called meeting is scheduled for Thursday to discuss next steps.
