SC man sentenced to jail for mistreating cats

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — A Cordova man charged with abandoning more than 100 cats has been sentenced to 60 days in jail.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reported (http://bit.ly/12mub8W ) that 45-year-old Richard Thomas pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of mistreatment of animals.

Officials say more than 50 of the cats either died or had to be put down after they were found abandoned in a mobile home in Orangeburg County in December 2011.

His estranged wife, 38-year-old Amy Thomas, faces one count of mistreatment of animals.

Testimony indicates the couple had separated three months before the animals were discovered.
