Volunteers help keep signals bright on SC lake

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Boaters on Lake Murray aren’t stuck in the dark after sunset thanks to dozens of navigation lights along the 650-mile lakefront and the volunteers who keep them bright.

The State of Columbia reports (http://bit.ly/14Tr9Js ) that retired electrical engineer Dave Moxley has kept the guide to boaters in the dark alight for 15 years, and Bill King has joined him for most of that time.

Moxley says handling upkeep on the lights a few hours a month is their small contribution to safety.

The lights are spaced so boaters can see at least two anywhere on the lake, using signals from the lights to determine where they are. Each of the waterfront traffic signals flash in distinct ways that mark its site on a chart.
