2nd person dies after Clarendon County house fire

SUMMERTON, S.C. (AP) — A woman has died from injuries in a fire that killed her husband at their Clarendon County home.

Coroner Hayes Samuels says 56-year-old Deloris Crummell died Saturday night.

Crummell had been at a Columbia hospital since Friday night, when she and her husband called to report a fire at their home but failed to get out in time.

Fifty-nine-year-old Gary Crummell was pronounced dead shortly after he was pulled from the home.

Samuels says it appears both victims died of smoke inhalation. He says the Crummells tried to retrieve valuables from their home before firefighters arrived.
