Charleston man gets 25 years in stabbing death

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A Charleston man will serve 25 years in jail after pleading guilty to stabbing his wife to death in front of his two daughters.

Authorities say 31-year-old Chesley “C.J.” Black was sentenced Monday after reaching a plea agreement and pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter. He had originally been charged with murder in the stabbing death of 25-year-old Amanda Kalman in September 2011.

His daughters, ages 2 and 4 at the time, were in the house when the stabbing occurred during an argument.

Authorities say Black later dropped off one daughter with relatives and fled with the other to Sumter County, where he was arrested two days later.

Prosecutors say they agreed to the plea agreement so Black’s older daughter would not have to testify at trial.
