Early morning chase leaves one man dead
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — One person is dead, and another is in the hospital after an early morning attempted break-in.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department reports that at 3:30 a.m. Friday, a deputy heard a noise coming from Columbia Power Sport on Two Notch Road. When he went to investigate, the deputy spotted two men attempting to break into the business.
Investigators say one of the suspects, James Branch, was caught, but the other suspect jumped into a truck to run over the deputies and in the process ran over Branch. The driver also ran into some K-9 vehicles.
The deputies say they pursued him in a car chase and was able to catch him after he crashed his car into Bakers Sports Pub. He was killed at the scene.
Branch is in the hospital and is expected to survive.
