Jury Rules Officers Acted in Self Defense

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)–A six-person jury ruled Wednesday that three Columbia Police Officers acted in self-defense in the shooting death of Ajani Mitchell.

The verdict was the culmination of a coroner’s inquest into the May 25th incident.

Police say the officers were responding to a domestic dispute between Mitchell and his mother.

Richland Co. Coroner Gary Watts says he received numerous concerns and questions from the community about just how Mitchell died.

Watts says with the Columbia Police Department already dealing with allegations of questionable officer conduct at time of the incident, it was necessary to rule out foul play.
