Mom Praises God Over Child’s Shrinking Brain Tumor

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — It’s been nearly one year since Richard Culliver was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Last year, doctors told his family to celebrate Christmas early. Then this week, an MRI showed his tumor has almost disappeared. 

When we visited Richard Wednesday afternoon, our interview was taken over by a fun game of ‘Streetfighter,’ on the Xbox. 

Richard, of course, won several times. But, it’s the bigger battle that he won this week that had us visiting him once again. 

A trip to the doctor’s office turned life-changing. 

“He said my boo boo was getting better,” says Richard. 

“All I could do was cry and hug Richard and just thank God and cry some more,” says Stephanie McMillan, Richard’s mom. 

Last September a fall at school lead to the diagnosis of a brain tumor. The prognosis wasn’t good. 

“We were devastated, I mean my whole world came crashing down on top of me. Because, who wants to hear that type of news about their child?,” says McMillan

That day Stephanie vowed to do everything she possibly could to make sure Richard had the best life possible. 

A quick look around his so-called ‘man cave,’ and you’ll see the community stepped up to help big time. 

Stephanie chronicled the entire eleven months on the ‘Richard’s Journey,’ Facebook page. From the saddest days to the happiest, it’s all on the page and with more 31,000 like the community has followed every step, praying for Richard.

Then Wednesday, Stephanie posted a picture of Richard’s MRI that showed the tumor vanishing. 

Stephanie says it’s God’s work and Richard agrees. 

Richard and his family will now begin the journey of getting back to normal life, including school. Stephanie says Richard will have both physical and speech therapy and he’s expected to come off Hospice care.
