It was a moment in time that changed American history, but say some the struggle to be treated equal is a lesson that we should never stop teaching or fighting for.

The South Carolina Democratic Committee held a public forum at Benedict College to discuss the March on Washington, the progress that’s been made, and work that still needs to be done.

SC Democratic Chair, Jamie Harrison says “it is so appropriate to to think of the many issues that we were tackling 50 years ago when some of those issues are now climbing back up onto the plate of discussion.”

Mainly concerns over laws being discussed in congress and voting rights, according to Harrison. While he says progress has been made he hopes a younger generation will continue to stay active and realize, strides don’t mean problems no longer exist.

Celebrations will take place throughout the country Wednesday  including right here in Columbia. Mayor Steve Benjamin along with other city leaders will hold a special ceremony at city hall beginning at 2:30pm.
