School Bus Carrying Elementary Students in Accident

LUGOFF, S.C. (WOLO) – An accident involving a school bus and another vehicle has closed a portion of US 1 near Lugoff-Elgin High School.

Lugoff Fire Chief Dennis Ray says it happened around 3:30pm by the Pine Mark subdivision.

He went on to say there were injuries reported. They did not appear to be life threatening, but he could not say if the injuries involved people on the school bus or in the other vehicle.

Meanwhile, Communications Director for the Kershaw County School District – Mary Anne Byrd – says students from Wateree Elementary School were on the bus. She says she didn’t know exactly how many were on board, but typically that particular bus transports around 50 students. Byrd adds the bus was at the beginning of its route.

Byrd says she was informed that at least two students were being taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

Another school bus was called to the scene to transport the rest of the children home. Byrd says the district has called the parents to inform them of the accident.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.

We have a crew heading to the scene and will bring you more information as it becomes available.
