Camden, S.C.  (WOLO)  —  Avista James says her American dream of home ownership is turning into a nightmare.  That’s because the federal loan she qualified for through the United States Department of Agriculture is on hold due to the government shutdown.

“It makes me sad that they are not concerned with the impact this is having on people’s lives,” said James.

The restaurant owner and first time home buyer was set to close Wednesday on a $158,000 house in Kershaw County and enjoy a 4% interest rate.  However, she was told the closing would be delayed until Friday.  As day two of the government shutdown coming to an end, there is no guarantee Friday will go as planned.  Avista’s realtor is also feeling the impact.

“If she can’t close, I don’t get paid.  Realtors get commission only,” said Dina Mangum with Great Southern Homes.  “The government is basically holding all the cards.”
