Columbia helps recycle oil from deep-fried turkeys

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The city of Columbia is providing a place for the leftover cooking oil from all those deep-fried turkeys prepared for Thanksgiving.

The city’s public works facility is collecting the cooking oil on Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

It will be closed Thanksgiving Day.

Columbia officials say they will also conduct the collections next week on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The oil must be free of water, soap and food scraps.

City officials point out that if oil is poured down the kitchen sink, it can cause divages and backups to the water system. They say proper recycling will help save money that can be used to maintain the system.
