SC camp accepting camper, staff applications

WEDGEFIELD, S.C. (AP) — A camp for disabled South Carolina children, teenagers and young adults is now accepting applications.

Starting Saturday, people interested in attending or being a counselor at Camp Burnt Gin this summer can submit their information to the Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Camp Burnt Gin is a special facility near Wedgefield in Sumter County for campers who have a physical disability or chronic illness.

Officials say the camp is open to people ages 7 to 25 with conditions including hearing loss, epilepsy and sickle cell anemia.

Run by DHEC, Camp Burnt Gin has two nurses on-site and a doctor on call for specialized needs. Camp sessions are scheduled for June, July and August.
