Police: Men posing as SCE&G workers
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – The Columbia Police Department wants you to be on alert for two men who are reportedly posing as SCE&G workers. Officers say they scammed an elderly couple on Johnson Avenue last week. Here’s how it went down. One of the suspects apparently said he needed access into the home to check the “wall sockets.” While he preoccupied the victims, officers say the other man stole several items, including a purse and wedding rings. Police believe the men left in a white, short-bed Dodge pickup trick. The Columbia Police Department wants to make sure you don’t get taken advantage of. It’s offering a few tips to protect yourself and your assets. First, don’t open the door to strangers. But if that happens, don’t allow them into your home. Second, if someone arrives at your home and introduces themselves as a worker, make sure they show you proper company ID. If not, dial 911 immediately. Lastly, if you feel threatened, don’t take action on your own. Call for help.
