(WOLO) COLUMBIA,S.C., — ” By the power’s vested in me in the state of South Carolina I now pronounce you Frank Kiraly and Richard Kiraly partners for life.” Those are the words these Columbia residents have been waiting to hear. While the Kiraly’s have been together for 15 years, and married for 10 of them…the nuptials they took in San Francisco were not legal here in this state…until now. ” we’re glad to be among the first here in Columbia. Richland has been our home for the last 13 years and we wanted them to acknowledge us.” And with the stroke of a pen, a stamp of approval, and an impromptu public ceremony – it was acknowledged…and official. “Tthere’s nothing like a marriage license. that’s the gold standard and it’s been denied to same sex couples for far too long. vo and the Kiraly’s were not alone. Dozens of others were at the probate court apply for their marriage licenses as well. We caught up with the attorney general to ask about the decision. “we’re working actually on contact with the government agencies right now. we’ll be in touch. Thank you. ” But he had much more to say in a statement released a short time later saying quote: “Despite today’s refusal to grant our motion…the US Supreme court has not yet resolved conflicting rulings by Federal Appeals courts on the issue of same sex marriage. When the US Supreme court decides to consider the case…our office will be supporting the position of the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals…which is more consistent with South Carolina state law…which upholds the unique status of traditional marriage.” And another victory for same sex couples today., Couples married outside of the state before November 18th will now be able to get insurance benefits for their partners. Couples Married in the state can begin apply for coverage 31 days after they receive their marriage license.
