City Worker Killed in Accident

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — The City of Columbia is mourning the loss of one of it’s employees. According to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts, 31-year-old Marvis Myers was killed after a construction accident Friday, It happened at Pulaski and College streets, at approximately 11:40 a.m. Watts says Myers was four to six feet below ground level working on some pipe repairs, when a cave-in occurred. Co-workers immediately began digging him out and called 911. Myers was transported by EMS to Palmetto Richland Memorial hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:08 p.m. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating. The City of Columbia City Manager Teresa Wilson released the following statement: “As a City of Columbia family, we deeply mourn the loss of one of our own. Today, we all worked together to support each other, while also handling all of the necessary steps required during this type of incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the employee‘s family members and we ask that the community, as a whole, keep us in their thoughts during this period of bereavement.”
