Sheriff: Suspect Killed was Waiting to Ambush Deputies
GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) _ Greenville County Sheriff Steve Loftis says a suspect in a robbery who was shot to death last weekend tried to ambush two of his deputies. At a news conference Thursday, Loftis said 24-year-old Chazsten Freeman hid behind a tree when deputies came to arrest him Saturday and waited until the officers were 3 feet away before firing. Authorities say Freeman missed, but the deputies who fired back killed the suspect. Loftis says Freeman had nine outstanding warrants against him at the time he was killed, including a charge of attempted murder for trying to run over a different deputy. The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating Freeman’s death, but the sheriff says it is obvious his officers were justified in the shooting.
