Hundreds of Acres of Forest, Wetlands on SC Coast Preserved

CONWAY, S.C. (AP) _ Almost 500 acres of forest and wetlands near Conway are being preserved for future generations. The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports the land is across the Waccamaw River from the city’s Riverwalk. The Nature Conservancy is buying more than 300 acres while the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge is acquiring the rest of the land. The Nature Conservancy asked Conway leaders this week if the city will take title to the larger tract. The city is working on plans to connect downtown Conway to the campus of Coastal Carolina University with a biking and walking trail through the properties. The city’s proposed budget includes $40,000 for a study on creating the trail.
