Charleston, SC (AP)– UPDATE: A judge set a trial date for Charleston shooting suspect, Dylann Roof for July 11, 2016. The 21-year old suspect in the Charleston shooting appeared at a hearing on whether or not documents would be released to the media. In court, the judge extended the gag order until Wednesday, July 22 at 5 pm. If no parties intervene by that time, the gag order will be lifted. The Ninth Circuit Solicitor’s Office says the suspect in the Emanuel AME Church shootings is expected in court for a hearing on whether documents in the case will be released to the media. Prosecutor Scarlett Wilson posted on her Twitter account that 21-year-old Dylann Roof is expected to attend Thursday’s hearing, and will be presented the indictments in the case. He faces nine counts of murder, three of attempted murder and a weapons charge in the June 17 shootings of nine black parishioners at Mother Emanuel AME. Circuit Judge J.C. Nicholson temporarily blocked the release of documents related to the shooting investigation, saying that could affect Roof’s right to a fair trial. But that move has been called into question by ABC News 4, The Post and Courier, and the Associated Press, all of which filed paperwork to get access to some of the investigative documents. South Carolina Press Association Attorney Jay Bender, who filed the motion along with Columbia Attorney Taylor M. Smith, IV, said Friday that the order was highly unusual and probably beyond the judge’s authority.
