Wofford adding women’s lacrosse

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Wofford is adding women’s lacrosse to its varsity sports.
Terriers athletic director Richard Johnson announced Thursday that the school will begin the sport for the 2017-18 academic year. The addition gives Wofford 19 varsity intercollegiate sports, nine of them women’s teams.
Wofford President Nayef H. Samhat said women’s lacrosse is among the fastest growing NCAA sports. Wofford’s first season will be in the spring of 2018.
Wofford will play in the Atlantic Sun Conference since its league, the Southern Conference, does not sponsor women’s lacrosse.
Other teams in the Atlantic Sun for women’s lacrosse include Furman, Mercer, Jacksonville, Old Dominion, Kennesaw State, Howard, Stetson, Central Michigan, Delaware State (in 2017) and Detroit.
